Opening a Bank Account in Costa Rica 2026: Foreigners, Companies and Banking Readiness Checker
Opening a bank account in Costa Rica is not usually difficult because of one form. The frustration starts when one missing document leads to another request, a second appointment, or a delay just when you need the account for an investment, a property closing, payroll or day-to-day business. Our approach is simple: help you understand what the bank is likely to focus on, prepare the file before it becomes urgent, and keep the process moving without promising something only the bank can approve.
Quick Answer
Can a foreigner open a bank account in Costa Rica? Yes, in many cases. Residents, non-residents and foreign-owned companies can all have possible banking routes, but they do not follow the same process. A passport can work for certain personal products, including the simplified CES framework, while a corporate account requires a review of the company, its owners, its activity and the money expected to move through the account.
The goal is not just to open an account. It is to have it ready when you need it.
If your account is tied to a deadline, start from that date and work backwards. A bank may ask for more information after the first review, especially when foreign shareholders, international transfers or significant capital are involved. Giving yourself room for those questions can be the difference between a routine onboarding and a last-minute problem.
Costa Rica Bank Account Readiness Checker
Use this quick check to see whether anything obvious could slow your application down. It is not a bank approval test. Think of it as a first review before you spend time collecting documents, booking an appointment or planning around an account-opening date.

Important: this is a preparation tool, not an approval test. The bank still makes its own KYC, KYB and risk decision, and its requirements can change by applicant and institution.

What matters before you apply
Banks do not only look at whether you have the right certificate or ID. They are trying to understand whether the person, the company, the money and the expected account activity make sense together. When we review a file, that consistency is what we look for first. It is also where many avoidable delays begin.

Can foreigners open a bank account in Costa Rica in 2026?
Yes, but the route depends on your status and on the account you need. A resident with a DIMEX will usually have a more straightforward personal-banking route than a non-resident relying on a passport — and if you are still working on your Costa Rica residency, that timing can affect your banking options. A company follows a different review altogether because the bank needs to understand the legal entity, the people behind it and the business activity.
The important point is not to assume that one person’s experience will apply to you. A friend may have opened an account with a passport, while your company may be asked for a much deeper file because it expects international wires or is receiving investment capital.
| Applicant | Typical starting point | What usually matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign resident | Personal account, subject to bank policy | Identification, income, address, tax residence and source of funds |
| Non-resident individual | Non-resident product or CES where available | Product limits, legal stay, low-risk profile and bank-specific requirements |
| Costa Rican company | Corporate account review | Ownership, signers, business purpose, financial profile and expected transactions |
If the company has not been formed yet, the banking plan should be considered while the structure is being chosen, not after everything else is finished. Our Companies in Costa Rica guide covers the entity options, while the Investment in Costa Rica Market Entry Planner looks at the wider project.
What a prepared process can save you from
Most of the value in preparing a bank application is not in filling out the forms for you. It is in reducing the avoidable back-and-forth that can happen when the bank sees the file for the first time.
| Common frustration | How we try to prevent it |
|---|---|
| Starting with the wrong account or institution | We first look at how you will use the account, who owns the company and what kind of funds will move through it. |
| Repeated requests for documents | We review the ownership, signing authority, source of funds and business story before the file goes in. |
| A trip to Costa Rica that does not finish the process | We confirm the likely identity, signature, original-document, apostille or translation issues before you plan around an appointment. |
| The account is still pending when payroll, a closing or a capital transfer is due | We treat the bank account as part of the project timeline and leave room for the bank’s follow-up questions. |
| Questions after the account is already active | We help keep the banking profile consistent with the company’s real accounting, payroll and transaction activity. |
A property closing, payroll launch, supplier payment or investment transfer gives the application a real deadline. We cannot control the bank’s approval time, but we can help you avoid losing days on issues that could have been identified before submission.
Non-residents and Cuentas de Expediente Simplificado (CES)
A Cuenta de Expediente Simplificado (CES) is a simplified personal-account framework for people who meet the bank’s low-risk criteria. The current BCCR framework allows several forms of identification, including a passport, and sets limits on how the account can be used.
That does not mean a passport opens every type of account. A CES is personal and is not a substitute for a corporate account. If you expect business income, payroll, material investment funds or regular international transfers, the correct banking route may be different.
Opening a corporate bank account in Costa Rica
For a foreign-owned company, the bank is not only opening an account. It is deciding whether it understands the company well enough to begin a financial relationship with it. That is why a certificate showing that the company exists is only the starting point.
In practice, the file usually needs to answer five questions clearly:
- Who owns and controls the company?
- Who is legally allowed to operate the account?
- What does the business actually do?
- Where will the initial and ongoing funds come from?
- What activity should the bank expect to see in the account?
The supporting documents depend on those answers and on the institution. For a new company, projections and a credible funding plan can matter more than historical financial statements. For an existing group, foreign ownership documents, financial information and the connection between the parent and the Costa Rican company can become more important. Companies entering through a free trade zone may face additional documentation questions tied to the regime’s specific regulatory requirements.
The bank still has to identify and understand the ultimate beneficial owners itself. If the ownership information in the corporate records, RTBF and bank forms does not line up, the application can slow down quickly. For the filing itself, use our Costa Rica UBO / RTBF guide.
Source of funds, source of wealth and the story behind the money
One of the easiest ways for an application to become frustrating is to answer a source-of-funds question with a bank statement and assume the issue is closed. A statement shows where the money is. The bank may still need to understand what generated it and how it reached the account from that source.
The exact evidence depends on the facts. Salary, business profits, a property sale, an investment redemption, a loan or an inheritance all leave different documentary trails — and if the funds include investment gains, be aware that Costa Rica now taxes certain capital gains, which can create additional documentation needs. The important thing is that the explanation and the supporting documents tell the same story.
For higher-value clients, the bank may also ask about source of wealth, which is broader: how the person or beneficial owner accumulated their overall wealth over time.
If the account will receive a large capital contribution, property purchase funds or acquisition money, the supporting file should be discussed before the transfer. Once the transaction is time-sensitive, every extra request from the bank feels much more expensive.
We handle the legal structure, banking preparation, immigration and compliance side. AG BPO Services supports the back-office side — accounting, payroll, invoicing and bank administration — so the company actually works once the account opens. One conversation covers both.
Why banks ask so many KYC, KYB and AML questions
Costa Rican financial institutions operate under customer due-diligence rules that require them to understand the customer, the beneficial owners, the economic activity, the origin of funds and the expected transaction pattern. Recurrent international transfers can require the bank to understand the business purpose and documentary support behind the expected flows.
That is why the best answer is not to make the application sound simpler than it really is. If the company has foreign owners, several jurisdictions or material international flows, we would rather explain those facts clearly at the beginning than have the bank discover them one question at a time.
Some profiles naturally receive more review, including politically exposed persons, higher-risk jurisdictions and regulated or specially supervised activities — for example, companies involved in virtual assets should understand the crypto travel rule and new VASP regulatory obligations, which banks are already factoring into their onboarding decisions. More review does not automatically mean a rejection; it usually means the documentation and explanation need to be stronger.
How we think about choosing a bank in Costa Rica
There is no single “best bank” for every foreigner or every company. The right fit depends on what you need the account to do. We normally look at the applicant profile, currencies, international transfers, payroll or supplier payments, digital controls and the type of business before deciding which institution makes sense to approach.
This matters because an account that is convenient for a resident receiving local income may not be the right choice for a foreign-owned company receiving capital from abroad. Bank products and internal risk policies also change, so we prefer to confirm current requirements for the specific case rather than rely on a generic ranking.
Can a Costa Rica bank account be opened remotely?
Sometimes part of the process can be handled remotely, but do not build your timeline around that assumption. The bank may still require an in-person step, video identification, original documents or specific signatures.
If you are abroad, we usually recommend reviewing the core file first and confirming who actually needs to appear. A short trip is much more useful when the main ownership, source-of-funds and corporate questions have already been identified.
International transfers, FATCA, CRS and tax residence
If the account will regularly send or receive money internationally, the bank may ask about the countries, counterparties, currencies, approximate amounts and commercial reason for those transfers. That information should match the business model you described when the account was opened.
A U.S. tax connection can also trigger FATCA documentation, while other foreign tax residencies can bring CRS questions. These are bank onboarding and reporting issues, not substitutes for the client’s own tax advice.
How long does opening a bank account in Costa Rica take?
There is no honest universal timeline. A simple personal application can move quickly, while a foreign-owned company with foreign documents, several owners or significant international activity can take longer. The bank’s workload and any follow-up questions also matter.
The practical question is not “how many days does a bank account take?” but “when do I actually need the account to be usable?” If that date is connected to payroll, a closing, a lease, a supplier payment or an investment transfer, build the application into the project schedule instead of leaving it to the end.
What tends to cause the most avoidable delay?
- A business description that is too vague for the expected transactions.
- Ownership or signing information that does not match across documents.
- Source-of-funds evidence that shows the transfer but not what generated the money.
- Foreign documents that need a certification, apostille or translation discovered too late.
- An assumption that the process is fully remote when the chosen bank requires an identity or signing step.
When a property closing, capital contribution or critical payment cannot wait for the bank to finish its review, AG TRUST can hold and administer the funds through an escrow or trust structure while the account opens. It is not a replacement for the bank account — it is a contingency that keeps the transaction from stalling over a pending process.
When is it worth having us involved?
If you are a resident opening a basic personal account, your income is straightforward and you are not working against a deadline, you may be perfectly comfortable handling the application directly with the bank.
Our help becomes more valuable when the account is part of something bigger: a foreign-owned company, an investment, a property transaction, a new operation, cross-border funding, several beneficial owners, foreign corporate documents, a regulated activity or a fixed date by which the account needs to be working.
In those cases, we do not try to replace the bank. We help you get to the bank with a file that is easier to understand and easier to review.
| When we usually add the most value | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Foreign-owned company or layered ownership | The bank has more people, documents and relationships to understand. |
| Large capital contribution or cross-border transfer | Source-of-funds and transaction support become more important before money moves. |
| Property closing, payroll launch or business start date | A banking delay can hold up the wider project. |
| Remote owner or foreign documents | Identity, signatures, apostilles and translations are easier to solve before travel or submission. |
How we prepare the application with you
We keep this part practical. First, we understand why you need the account and when you need it. Then we review the ownership, signing authority, business activity and source of funds as one file rather than as separate pieces.
Once the basic picture is clear, we help confirm the banking route, organize what should be submitted, and stay with the process when the bank asks follow-up questions. We do not promise approval or a fixed opening date. What we try to remove is the avoidable confusion around the application.
Already have the company and the funds ready?
Send us the basic profile before you submit the bank application. We can tell you what we would want to clarify first.
Once the account opens, make sure the company can actually use it well
For a company, the account is usually the point where the legal setup becomes operational. Supplier payments start, payroll begins, invoices are collected and the accounting records need to match what is really moving through the bank.
If you already have a local accounting and payroll team, we can work alongside them. If you do not, AGBPO Services can support the local back-office side so you do not have to build every administrative function from scratch. We mention this here because clean accounting, reconciliations and payroll records also make future bank reviews much easier.
For annual legal and tax deadlines, the Costa Rica Corporate Compliance Calendar and Planner is the next useful step once the account and operation are running.
After opening: keep the account profile consistent with the real business
Opening day is not the end of the bank’s compliance relationship with you. Changes in ownership, legal representation, activity, revenue, countries, customers, suppliers or source of funds can lead to updated questions later. The easier those changes are to explain from the company’s records, the less disruptive a future review is likely to be.

TALK TO US ABOUT THE ACCOUNTFrequently Asked Questions
Foreigners and non-residents
- Can a foreigner open a bank account in Costa Rica without residency?
- Yes, in some cases. The available product and requirements depend on the institution and the applicant’s profile. A passport can be used for certain simplified personal accounts, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of a standard account.
- What is a CES account in Costa Rica?
- A Cuenta de Expediente Simplificado is a personal account for individuals who meet a simplified low-risk framework. It is useful for some non-residents, but it is not designed to replace a corporate account.
- Can I open the account from outside Costa Rica?
- Sometimes part of the process can be handled remotely. The bank may still require an identity, signature, video or in-person step, so confirm that point before planning travel or a closing around the account.
Corporate bank accounts
- Can a Costa Rican company owned 100% by foreigners open a local bank account?
- Yes. Foreign ownership does not prevent the company from applying. The bank will still review the owners, legal representative, business activity, financial profile, source of funds and expected account use.
- Does the company need RTBF before opening a bank account?
- Being current with RTBF is important where it applies, but the bank still has to perform its own beneficial-owner review. The two processes support each other but are not the same thing.
- Do new companies need financial statements?
- A new company may not have historical statements, so the bank may focus instead on projections, the funding plan and the documents supporting the people or entities providing the capital.
Timing, source of funds and professional help
- Are bank statements enough to prove source of funds?
- Not always. A statement can show the banking trail, but the bank may still ask what economic activity or transaction originally generated the money.
- How long does a corporate bank account take to open?
- There is no fixed timeline. Ownership, foreign documents, the source of funds, the business activity and the bank’s follow-up questions can all affect timing. If you have a fixed business date, plan around that date rather than an internet estimate.
- Do I need a lawyer to open a bank account in Costa Rica?
- Not for every account. Straightforward personal applications are often handled directly with the bank. Legal support is more useful when a foreign-owned company, investment, cross-border funding, foreign corporate documents or a time-sensitive transaction is involved.
- Can AG Legal guarantee the bank will approve the account?
- No. The decision belongs to the bank. Our role is to help you present a clear, consistent file and reduce avoidable delays or misunderstandings during the process.
- What if I need accounting or payroll after the account opens?
- If you already have a local team, we can coordinate with them. If not, AGBPO Services can support the back-office side of the operation so banking, accounting and payroll are not built as disconnected pieces.
